- He was long time in shadow of Anton Geesink and although he won more titles than Geesink he stayed all his sportlife in bright shadow for media.
- He used to be a mariner in his young ages.
- He is only and probably the last judoka who won 2 single gold medals in one Olympic Games.
- After retirement he moved to proffesional rink in Japan.
- In 2001 he had neurological accident and stayed physically disabled.
