  • He was long time in shadow of Anton Geesink and although he later won more titles than Geesink he stayed all his sportlife in bright shadow for media.
  • He used to be a mariner in his youth.
  • His favorite technic was tai otoshi.
  • He is only and probably the last judoka who won two gold medals in one Olympic Games.
  • After retirement he moved to proffesional rink in Japan.
