Bio

He was born in Veendam what is city in North Netherlands near Groningen.

He lives and trains judo in Haarlem (Kenamju).

Career and Style

Grol is type of judoka who represents European judo in every way. Tactical judo.

In beginning of his senior career he had to wait for his opportunity because Middleweight category where he fought was occupied by Dutch judo legend Mark Huizinga and Half-Heavyweight where he moved in middle of 2007 by Elco van der Geest. He somehow intuited that over Geest he has more chance to fight in big tournaments.

In 2008 he made it and qualified to the exclusion of Geest in Beijing Olympic Games. There he got into semifinal match against Zhitkeyev with who he unlucky lost by contra technique.

The match against Zhitkeyev showed the weakest part of Grol's judo... consistecy. Grol has abilities be the best Half-Heavyweighter but he somehow can't get the final step. His attitude to his opponents is in some way careless.

Grol like all judo player have troubles with knees. First serious injury of knee was just month before 2009 World Championships but he started there and won silver medal. In 2011 he had troubles with his back and year later in 2012 with thumbfinger on foot.
