Игорь Макаров
Ihar Makarau (Belorussian)

Bio

He was born in Kimry (Tver Oblast).

In 1987 he moved with his family to city Homyel (Belarusian SSR) where his father got job.

His father and brother later moved back to Russia (Moscow) but he stayed in Homyel because of studies and he met there his future wife.

He has university degree from Mechanical engineering.<ref>http://www.noc.by/chempiony_olimpijskih/makarov.html?print=1</ref>

He lives and trains in Homyel (Gomel).

He feels himself more Russian than Belorussian.<ref>http://www.vminsk.by/news/27/36142/</ref>

He is married and has 2 children.

Career and Style

In begining of his career he hesitated if he really wants to be proffesional sportsman or if he wants work as petroleum engineer.

Makarov has never had perfect judo skills. He owns just some seoi-nagi skill... he was a leg-grabber and very tough judo player with strong grips, very good moves and timing. His weak part is mood. He is not very determinted judo player.

He is one of the most underrated judoka. He is olympic champion but if you ask anybody who won olympic gold medal at 2004 Athens in Half-Heavyweight category he won't be sure. He did not sell his story probably because he represents country which is not very popular for their politic regime. His mother died few months before Olympic Games so his olympic gold medal had taste of sadness. He did not celebrate much.<ref>http://kimrypress.ru/sport/2624.html</ref>

In 2005 before European Championshis he suffered shoulder injury and underwent surgery.<ref>http://sportpanorama.by/content/wrestling/2382/</ref> Recovery took almost a year and he still felt the pain.

Since 2007 he had also problems with weight. He was not willing to lose weight under 100kg and he did not qualify for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games because instead of him was nominated Yury Rybak who was fighting over 100kg for longer time.

Since 2009 he moved among heavyweighters permanently. Later he was only elite Belorussian judoka who accepted noleggrabbing rule and he learned fighting without using it. His teammates rather retire or moved to another sport like sambo, MMA etc.

In 2010 he won his first European title and later qualified for 2012 London Olympic Games where he showed his class and took 5th place.
