Bio

He was born in city Bonn which was capital city of West Germany.

He began judo at age nine in Swisstal.<ref>http://www.netzathleten.de/Nachrichten/Die-Vorstellung-unserer-Olympioniken-Andreas-Toelzer/Judo/-6991138132017709056/a</ref>

He lives in Cologne where he works as military man.

Career and Style

Tölzer is big, strong, long-legged and defensive minded judo player. He is really good in defense because he knows his opponents (weak, strong parts). He doesn't get much penalties and when opponent is coming with same defensive tactics Tölzer usually win because of less penalties. He doesn't like attacking he is just waiting for right moment and only then practises some techniques. Saying which is his favourite is hard. He is very good on the ground and there he uses some specific move called Toelzer-Turnover (he used it for example in his first 2012 London Olympic match against Georgian). His weak part is speed, quick moves in standing. His judo there is slow so that's why he is not succesful in Openweight.

His career is afflicted by injuries. In beggining of his career he had troubles with knee. In 2005 he had injury of shoulder. In 2007 some injury of abdominal muscle (maybe groins?) and in end of 2009 he almost retired because he caught some infection into spine.

Tölzer have never been the top seed in big tournaments but he was always ranked among the best heavyweighters of his generation.
