In 2010 he finally got chance to start in World Championships when IJF increased quota for two judokas from a single country per cathegory. Unfortunately he lost in first rounds and he was thinking about retiring.

For 2012 London Olympic Games he was chosen represent South Korea instead of young [[Gyu-Won I]]. He caught his chance for 100%. In final match he bet Cuban judoka and became the oldest gold medalist from men's judo tournament. He was 33 years old. During ceremony he showed respect to his trainer because he was who motivated him in continuation.

Song's judo was based on poerfull grips (kumikata). His Te-waza especially Seio-nagi was very dangerous because he was practising it on both sides.
