He was born in Karaganda what is forth biggest city in Kazakhstan.
He is from judo family. His father Sergey is judo coach and former Soviet Champion and his two brothers are also judokas.
He is married and has one child.

In 2007 he tored ligaments in his shoulder and underwent operation. He had to miss 2007 World Championships and the injury influenced his attendance at 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
