• He started judo at age 15 in Havana.
• He was typical Cuban judoka. Very powerfull and athletic but also with technical skill.
• After 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal where he won gold medal he was often injuried and could not well prepared to defend title at 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.
• He retired just after the Games.
• He then became a trainer of Cuban women's team.
